History

The Friesian is believed to have originated in Friesland, a small province in northern Netherlands.

The Friesian horse had a difficult history, often weaving in and out of myth and bordering on extinction. Highly treasured as a faithful and dependable battle horse, the Friesian’s numbers flourished in the 1700s since the need for war mounts was common. Its powerful stature, beautiful looks, and unwavering loyalty made the Friesian an ideal battle-horse

However, by the 1800s feuds among nations had died down and farming had grown in popularity. The majority of the nobility had been torn from their thrones. The Friesian's were powerful, yes, but they required a little extra care than heavier draft horses if put into taxing farm work. They were simply not made for the job. No one wanted an elegant and groomed black stallion as a farm horse. At present, crossbreeding was common and this led to the Friesian being constantly crossbred with stockier draft horses to provide an efficient work animal. In 1900s only three purebred stallions were available for breeding.

Desperate to save this ancient horse, the natives of Friesland and many others who cared struggled to publicize the nigh extinction of the Friesian, and in 1913 they finally managed to track down the three stallions and sire a new era of Friesians from them. While the Friesian breed was still recovering, tractors were introduced to farming, and, due to the lack of need for work horses, even the Friesians used for field work in their native land began to evanescence once more.  Luckily, before another drastic decline of the breed could take hold, the Friesian was brought back as a sport, leisure, and dressage mount, permanently stabilizing their numbers after a long and difficult history of struggling and near extinction.
